Global Mamas

Fair trade and cooperation is important to us in how we do business.
In creating a business it involves more than ourselves, but also support from our community.

Global Mamas Sol Sisters works with Global Mamas, a fair trade women’s cooperative in Ghana by finding markets in Scandinavia to sell their products.

Global Mamas’ cooperative is comprised of 26 small women-owned businesses, mothers like us, using their talents of sewing and traditional African batik to create a line of high quality, handmade, unique clothing and accessories for the whole family.

Global Mamas In coming together as a cooperative, the women work together to reach larger markets around the world; however, still maintaining their independence.  All Global Mamas members are provided a “living wage”- over 10 times Ghana’s minimum wage.

Members are paid upfront for completed products and receive financial assistance through a raw materials revolving loan fund.
This leaves more proceeds to increase the revenue of those women who actually produce the goods, thus promoting their social equality.

In supporting Global Mamas members, this boosts the economy of their community through creating jobs, apprentice opportunities, and continuing the traditional craft of West African batik.

The Global Mamas cooperative is a proud member of the Fair Trade Federation (FTF) and World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO).
In being members of these organizations the women are working hard to maintain fair and equitable partnerships with marketers around the world, specially in North America and Europe.

Creating and maintaining a fair trade approach provides a stable and fair wage to all artisans for their handcrafted work.

Global Mamas

All of Global Mamas creations are made by hand in small scale employing the talents of the batikers and the seamstresses.

The process begins with batiking of the cotton fabric, and then sent to the seamstresses to finish the item.
The whole process is labor intensive and often utilizes simple production methods, like hand-powered sewing machines.

This means that every product purchased from Global Mamas is a unique piece.
All of the Global Mamas creations have the name of the women who batiked and the name of the women who had sewn the piece on each of the information tags.

You are also able to read their stories online, at Meet the Women
Because each item is handcrafted, design and color may vary. This is what makes artisan created designs especially beautiful and one of a kind.

Just as Sol Sisters body creations, employs the small scale, organic handmade production here in Sweden,  Global Mamas is doing the same, in addition to expanding awareness of the West African culture.  In purchasing Global Mamas creations, one is buying style with conscience.
